UAN login is how you open your own PF account on the EPFO unified portal, using your 12 digit UAN, your password and a captcha. People also call it EPFO login, PF login, PF employee login or member login, and some type it as UAN log in. All of these point to one sign in page.
This guide walks through the screen field by field and lists the errors people hit most. This site is independent of EPFO. Keep your password and OTP to yourself; we will never request them.

Who needs the EPFO member login
Any employee with an activated UAN can use the member login. You need it to view service history, open the passbook, update KYC, add a nominee, file a withdrawal or pension claim, track that claim and request a transfer of old PF.
If you have never activated your UAN, the sign in will not work yet. These days activation is done only in UMANG, where a face scan confirms you, and our UAN activation guide covers it. If you do not know your number at all, start with know your UAN.
UAN login steps on the unified portal
- Type the member portal address yourself: unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in/memberinterface. You can also reach it from epfindia.gov.in through the option for employees and then member e sewa.
- In the UAN box, enter your 12 digit UAN with no spaces.
- Enter your password. It is case sensitive.
- Type the captcha characters exactly as shown. Use the refresh icon if they are hard to read.
- Press Sign In.
- If the portal sends a one time password to your registered mobile, enter it within the time shown and continue.
- Your member home opens with your name, UAN and the main menus.
Sign out from the menu when you finish, especially on a shared computer.
What each field and screen means
| Item | What to enter or expect |
|---|---|
| UAN | Universal Account Number, 12 digits, same for every job |
| Password | Set by you after activation. Mix of capital and small letters, digits and a special character, within the length shown on screen |
| Captcha | Letters and numbers in an image, to block automated sign ins |
| OTP | Six digit code to your UAN registered mobile, when the portal asks for it |
| Forgot Password | Link to reset using Aadhaar OTP |
| Member home | Opens after sign in, showing profile, KYC status and menus |
Your member ID, the long code that includes your employer's details, is not the username. Only the UAN works here. The difference is explained on what is UAN.
Using the same login for passbook and UMANG
The EPF passbook is on a separate EPFO site, passbook.epfindia.gov.in. It accepts the same UAN and password as the member portal, with its own captcha. Passbooks usually open after the member account is fully active, so a fresh activation may need some time. Our EPF passbook page explains each column.
In the UMANG app, EPFO services ask for your UAN and an OTP rather than the portal password. This is useful when you have forgotten the password but still have the registered mobile.
Common login errors and fixes
| Problem | Why it happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Invalid username or password | Typing error, caps lock, or old password | Retype slowly. If still wrong, use Forgot Password |
| Invalid captcha | Characters misread or page left open too long | Refresh the captcha and type it again |
| UAN not activated | Activation never completed | Activate in UMANG through face authentication |
| Account locked | Too many failed password tries | Wait for the lock period shown, then reset the password |
| OTP not received | Old number on record, weak network, or message filter | Wait a minute, check signal, then request again. Update the number if it has changed |
| Site not loading | Maintenance or heavy traffic | Try early morning or late evening, or use UMANG |
Lost password help is on our password reset page.
If your registered mobile number has changed
OTPs for sign in reach the mobile number your UAN is registered with. If you still remember your password, sign in and change the number under the Manage menu, in contact details. The portal confirms the new number with an OTP sent to it.
If you cannot sign in and the old number is gone, the password reset screen offers an Aadhaar based route, where the OTP goes to the mobile linked with Aadhaar. If that number is also out of date, update it with UIDAI first. Your employer can also help confirm your details.
Login safety rules
Check the address bar before typing your password. The real portal ends in epfindia.gov.in. Messages that say your PF is blocked and ask you to log in through a link are a common trick.
- Do not save your PF password on a shared device.
- Do not give your UAN and password to an agent who promises a faster claim.
- Change your password if you entered it on any doubtful site.
Frequently asked questions
Can I log in to EPFO with my PF member ID?
No. The member portal accepts only the 12 digit UAN as the username. The member ID identifies one job's account under that UAN.
Why does the portal ask for an OTP after my password?
It is an extra check that the person signing in holds the registered mobile. Enter the six digit code sent to that number. If it never arrives, check that the number on record is still yours.
Is the EPFO login the same for employer and employee?
No. Employees use the member portal with their UAN. Employers use a separate establishment portal, covered in our employer login guide.
My UAN login works but the passbook says no record. Why?
A new member ID may not have any contribution posted yet, or the passbook may take time after activation. Check service history on the portal and ask your employer whether the monthly return has been filed.
Can I sign in on my phone?
Yes. The member portal opens in a phone browser, though some pages are easier on a larger screen. The UMANG app is another option for many EPFO tasks.
How many wrong attempts lock the account?
The portal locks the account after repeated wrong passwords. The exact count and lock time can change, so follow the message shown and reset the password if needed.
