An EPF balance check takes less than a minute once your UAN is active and your mobile number is linked to it. There are five free routes: a missed call, an SMS, the government UMANG app, Passbook Lite on the member portal and the full passbook website.

If you are wondering how to check PF balance on a basic phone, use the missed call or SMS. To see which employer paid what, or to know how much you can withdraw, use a passbook based method.
Conditions for the PF balance check number to work
- Your UAN is activated on the member portal. Freshers should first read know your UAN and UAN activation.
- The mobile you call or text from is the one registered against your UAN.
- Your UAN carries one or more verified KYC details: bank account, Aadhaar or PAN. The KYC update page shows how.
- Your employer is not an exempted establishment running its own trust.
If any of these is missing, the call simply ends and no message arrives, or the SMS reply says the UAN is not found.
PF missed call number: how to use it
- From your UAN registered mobile, dial 9966044425.
- The call rings twice and disconnects on its own. You are not charged.
- Within a few minutes an SMS arrives with your latest PF balance and the last contribution details.
The reply covers the account linked to your current member ID. If you have older IDs that were never transferred, their balance may not be included. Use the passbook to see each ID.
Check by SMS in your language
Send EPFOHO UAN to 7738299899 from your registered mobile. Type the words exactly; you do not replace UAN with your number. The reply comes in English by default.
For another language, add its three letter code at the end, for example EPFOHO UAN TAM for Tamil.

UMANG EPFO: check PF from the app
- Install the government UMANG app from your phone's official app store, or open web.umang.gov.in.
- Register or log in with your mobile number and MPIN or OTP.
- Search for EPFO and open Employee Centric Services.
- Tap View Passbook, enter your UAN and request an OTP.
- Type the one time code that arrives on your registered number, then select a member ID to see its balance.
UMANG is the only PF balance check app run by the government. Apps that ask for your UAN password to show the balance are not needed and can misuse the data.
EPF passbook balance check on the portal
Sign in at the UAN login screen and open Passbook Lite from the View menu for a summary. For a detailed year wise view and a PDF, use passbook.epfindia.gov.in with the same UAN and password. Each column of that statement is explained on our EPF passbook page, so we do not repeat it here.
Remember that the passbook site updates about 6 hours after a new registration or password change.
Worked example: reading the balance figures
Suppose the SMS reply shows: EPF balance Rs 3,42,600, last contribution Rs 3,550.
- The balance is the total of your share and the employer EPF share, with interest credited so far.
- The last contribution of 3,550 is the month's deposit: 2,400 from you and 1,150 from the employer on a Rs 20,000 wage.
- The pension amount of 1,250 for that month is not in the 3,42,600; it sits in the pension scheme.

When the balance looks wrong or does not arrive

No one needs your password or OTP to tell you your balance. Treat any caller who asks for it as a fraud.
Frequently asked questions
How can I check my PF balance without UAN?
However you choose to know PF balance, the services are tied to the UAN, so you need at least the UAN registered mobile. The missed call works from that mobile even if you do not remember the UAN itself. To find a lost UAN, see the know your UAN page.
How to check EPF balance if I have changed my phone number?
Update the new mobile in the member portal profile first, after logging in with your UAN. Until that is done, missed call and SMS replies will not reach the new number.
What is the PF balance check number?
The missed call number is 9966044425 and the SMS number is 7738299899. Both work only from the mobile registered with your UAN.
Why does the missed call disconnect without any SMS?
Usually your UAN has no seeded KYC, the mobile is not linked or the UAN is not activated. Fix these on the member portal and try again after a day.
Is UMANG the official app for EPFO?
UMANG is the Government of India app that carries EPFO services such as View Passbook and Track Claim. It is free. Avoid other apps that ask for your EPFO password.
Does the balance include my pension money?
No. The missed call, SMS and passbook balance show your EPF shares and interest. The pension contribution is tracked separately under the pension scheme.
How often is the PF balance updated?
It changes when your employer's monthly deposit is reconciled and once a year when interest is credited. A gap of some weeks after salary day is normal.
