EPFO KYC means the identity and bank records attached to your UAN: Aadhaar, PAN and a bank account, plus correct personal details such as name, gender and birth date. When these match, claims, transfers and balance alerts move without manual checks. When they do not, most online services stop at an error screen.
This page covers each KYC item, who approves it under current EPFO rules, and how to fix a mismatch. It is an independent guide. Do every update yourself on the official portal, and never share an OTP with anyone who calls offering help.

What EPFO KYC covers and why claims depend on it
Your UAN is the account; KYC is the proof that the account belongs to you. EPFO uses the seeded Aadhaar to confirm identity during OTP login, e-nomination and online claims. PAN decides how tax is deducted if you withdraw early. The bank account is where every claim is paid, so a wrong or unverified account is the single most common reason money does not arrive.
- Aadhaar: mandatory for almost every online service.
- PAN: strongly advised; without it TDS on an early withdrawal can be higher.
- Bank account: must be in your own name, active, with a correct IFSC.
- Mobile number: receives OTPs and SMS alerts.
If your UAN is not yet active, start with UAN activation and come back here.
How to link UAN with Aadhaar
Whether you call it uan link with aadhar or linking your aadhar card with UAN, the task is the same. Most newer UANs already carry Aadhaar because it is checked when the UAN is created. Older accounts may not. To link UAN with Aadhaar yourself:
- Log in through the EPFO member portal with your UAN and password. See UAN login if the page will not open.
- Open Manage and choose KYC.
- Tick Aadhaar, enter the 12 digit number and your name exactly as printed on the Aadhaar card.
- Give consent and verify with the OTP sent to the mobile linked to Aadhaar.
- Check that the status shows as verified under the KYC list.
The match is strict. A dropped middle name or a different date of birth will fail the check, and you will need a correction first, explained further down.
People often search for an epf aadhaar link last date. Aadhaar seeding has been required for years and there is no window that closes; if your account lacks it, link it now, because claims and transfers will not go through without it.
Adding PAN to your PF account
PAN goes in through the same Manage then KYC screen. Select PAN, type the number and the name as on the card, and save. The system checks the PAN with the income tax database. After that the request waits for your present employer, who approves it from the employer portal with a digital signature or Aadhaar e-sign.
If your employer has closed or will not act, the PAN request can stay pending. Raise it with HR first. If that fails, raise an EPFiGMS grievance.
EPFO bank account update and seeding
Under current EPFO rules the employer no longer approves bank seeding. Once your bank verifies the account, it is linked. Members who already have an account seeded can replace it by entering the new account number and IFSC and confirming with Aadhaar OTP.
- Go to Manage, then KYC, and select Bank.
- Enter the account number twice and the IFSC. Check the branch name that appears.
- Confirm with Aadhaar OTP when asked.
- Wait for the status to change from pending to verified. Banks usually take a few working days.
Because the account holder name is checked during seeding, you no longer need to upload a cancelled cheque or passbook image when filing an online claim. Use a savings account in your own name. Closed or dormant accounts cause claim returns, so seed the account you actually use.
Correcting name, date of birth and other profile details
EPFO now lets many members fix profile errors without the employer. If your UAN was issued on or after 1 October 2017, when Aadhaar matching became compulsory, you can correct name, date of birth, gender, nationality, father's or mother's name, marital status, spouse name and dates of joining and leaving yourself, with no documents.
| Your situation | Route |
|---|---|
| UAN from October 2017 onward, Aadhaar verified | Self correction on the member portal with Aadhaar OTP |
| Older UAN, Aadhaar linked | Online request that your employer approves |
| UAN not linked with Aadhaar | Joint declaration on paper through the employer, sent to EPFO |
| Employer closed | Attested joint declaration submitted at the regional PF office |
A pending request that was stuck with your employer can be deleted and filed again under the self route if you qualify. A mismatch between Aadhaar and UAN is often what blocks a PF transfer or claim.
Reading your KYC status
After any UAN KYC update, the epfo login KYC screen shows two lists: approved items and items awaiting action. The labels below are what members usually see.
| Status | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Verified by UIDAI | Aadhaar matched | Nothing |
| Pending with employer | PAN or an old style correction is waiting | Remind HR |
| Pending with bank | Bank is checking the account | Wait a few working days |
| Rejected | Name or number did not match | Fix the detail and submit again |
You can also confirm KYC from the EPF passbook login, which shows your basic profile at the top.
Common KYC errors and fixes
| Problem | Why | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Aadhaar OTP not received | Mobile not linked with Aadhaar | Update mobile at an Aadhaar centre first |
| Demographic mismatch | Aadhaar spelling or birth date differs from UAN | Profile correction or joint declaration |
| Bank shows pending for weeks | IFSC changed after a branch merger | Delete and add again with the new IFSC |
| PAN rejected | Name differs from income tax records | Enter the name exactly as on the PAN |
| PF mobile number change fails | OTP going to an old number | Use the contact details option, or ask your employer to help |
Safety while doing KYC
KYC is free and you can complete it yourself. Do not pay anyone who offers to update KYC or release PF. Never share your password, OTP, Aadhaar or bank details over a call or message. This site will never ask for them. If someone has already taken an OTP from you, change your password at once using password reset.
Use only the official portal at EPFO member portal or the government UMANG app, and check that the address ends in gov.in before you log in.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check my EPFO KYC status?
After your UAN login, KYC sits under Manage on the member portal. Approved items appear in one list and pending items in another. Each shows who it is waiting for.
Does my employer still need to approve my bank account?
No. Under current EPFO rules bank seeding is completed once your bank verifies the account. PAN and some older profile corrections still go to the employer.
How do I change my bank account in EPF after changing banks?
Open the bank option under KYC, enter the new account number and IFSC, and confirm with Aadhaar OTP. The new account replaces the old one after the bank verifies it.
Can I do PF name change online?
Yes, if your UAN was issued from October 2017 onward and is Aadhaar verified, you can correct the name yourself. Older UANs need employer approval, and unlinked ones need a joint declaration.
Is KYC possible through UMANG?
UMANG offers several EPFO services, including some KYC and UAN tasks, but menus change. The member portal shows the full KYC screen, so use it if a task is missing in the app.
Why does my claim say KYC not complete?
Usually the bank is unverified or Aadhaar is missing. Fix the item marked pending, then file again. The claim status page explains other rejection reasons.
