EPFO pension status and the EPS pension scheme explained

Track by PPOForm 10C or 10DUpdated 17 Oct 2026

EPFO pension status tells you whether your pension claim has been settled, which office pays it and whether your Pension Payment Order has been issued. Behind that status sits the Employees' Pension Scheme, the part of your employer's contribution that buys a monthly pension instead of a lump sum.

This page explains how EPS money builds up, when you can draw a pension or withdraw the amount instead, the form for each situation, and how pensioners track payments. Rules here follow current EPFO notices; where a change has been announced, check the portal before you act on it.

How EPS money builds up

Out of the employer's 12 percent contribution, 8.33 percent goes to EPS and the rest to your EPF. For most members the EPS share is worked out on wages up to Rs 15,000 a month, so the usual maximum is Rs 1,250 a month. This amount does not earn interest in your name and does not sit as a withdrawable balance. It earns you service years.

That is why the pension column in your EPF passbook shows contributions but no running total with interest. People asking how to check pension balance in EPFO should read the passbook pension column alongside total service.

Pension formula: pensionable salary multiplied by pensionable service, divided by 70. With a pensionable salary of Rs 15,000 and 20 years of service: 15,000 x 20 / 70 = Rs 4,285 a month (rounded down). Pensionable salary is the average of wages over the last 60 months of membership.

Service above nine and a half years is rounded up to ten. The withdrawal forms page covers Form 19 and Form 31, which deal with the EPF side.

EPF pension withdrawal rules under current notices

Eligibility to withdraw pension contribution in EPF depends on two things: less than 10 years of service and having left the job. The withdrawal is not your contributions plus interest; it is wages multiplied by a factor set in the scheme for your completed years.

EPFO has announced that the waiting period before a premature pension withdrawal rises from two months to 36 months after leaving, while EPF can be partly withdrawn sooner. The aim is to keep members in the scheme until they reach 10 years. Treat these epfo pension withdrawal new rules as announced and confirm the current wait on the portal before relying on them.

Once you take the withdrawal benefit, that service ends. Your family also loses the pension cover tied to it. If you expect to rejoin a covered job, a scheme certificate or simply leaving the amount alone may be better.

To estimate your EPF side, use the planner on the PF withdrawal page.

How to withdraw PF pension amount online

  1. Make sure Aadhaar and bank are verified on the KYC screen and the date of exit is marked.
  2. Log in to the member portal and open Online Services, then Claim.
  3. Verify the last four digits of your bank account.
  4. Select pension withdrawal (Form 10C) or monthly pension (Form 10D) from the list. Only the options you qualify for appear.
  5. For Form 10D, confirm family details and choose the start date.
  6. Submit with Aadhaar OTP and note the reference number.

Track it on the claim status page. Death claims and cases without Aadhaar still go on paper to the regional office.

EPFO pension status check online for pensioners

The epfo pension portal for pensioners has no separate password. People search for an epfo pensioners portal login or epfo pension portal login, but the page works with your PPO and office details.

  1. Open epfindia.gov.in and find Pensioners' Portal under services for pensioners.
  2. Choose Know Your PPO No. if you do not have it, and enter your bank account number or PF member ID.
  3. Choose Know Your Pension Status, pick the issuing office, enter the PPO number and submit.
  4. For payment history, use the pension payment enquiry option on the same portal.

The UMANG app also lists some pension services under EPFO, which is handy if the website is slow. The same steps answer an epf pension status query from a family member helping a retired parent.

PPO, payments and life certificates

The Pension Payment Order is the reference number issued when pension is sanctioned. Quote it in every pension query. EPFO now pays pensions through a central system, so pension can go to any bank and branch in India, and moving city or changing bank no longer needs a PPO transfer between offices.

Every pensioner must submit a digital life certificate once a year. It stays valid for one year from the date given. You can do it at home with the Jeevan Pramaan and Aadhaar face authentication apps, or at your bank, a common service centre or a PF office. A lapsed certificate is the main reason a pension suddenly stops.

Higher pension status

Members and pensioners who applied for pension on higher wages can track the application on the EPFO unified portal. You need the acknowledgement number from the application, your UAN or PPO, and Aadhaar OTP. Look for the pension on higher wages option on the member portal or on epfindia.gov.in to check your epf higher pension status. The result shows where the application stands, for example with the employer, with the regional office, or whether a demand letter has been issued. Any epfo higher pension link sent by message should be ignored; type the address yourself. If a demand letter asks you to deposit an amount, read it fully and pay only through the method it names.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an EPS account number?

No separate number exists. EPS sits inside your PF member ID and UAN. After pension starts, the PPO number becomes your pension reference.

Can I withdraw the employer's pension share?

Only if your service is under 10 years and you have left the job, through Form 10C. The amount comes from the scheme's table, not from a running balance.

Is EPS pension taxable?

Monthly pension is treated as income and taxed at your slab rate. A lump sum withdrawal benefit is generally treated differently; check the claim form instructions or a tax adviser.

How long does Form 10D take?

There is no fixed promise. Most complete cases are settled within a few weeks once KYC and service details are clean.

Who gets pension after a pensioner dies?

The spouse receives widow or widower pension, and children may receive children's pension within the scheme's limits. Keep e-nomination and family details up to date.

Can I delay my pension beyond 58?

Yes. EPS allows deferring the pension, and the amount rises for each year of deferment under the scheme rules. Choose this while filing Form 10D.
