EPFO e nomination: adding and updating your PF nominee

Aadhaar e-signFamily detailsUpdated 17 Oct 2026

EPFO e nomination is the online form that tells EPFO who should receive your PF, pension and insurance money if you die while a member. Without a nominee, your family has to prove its claim with extra papers, which can take months at a time when they need the money most.

The whole process runs on the member portal and finishes with an Aadhaar OTP signature. It is free, takes about fifteen minutes once you have family details ready, and you can replace it whenever your family changes.

What is e nomination in EPFO

A PF nomination is a written instruction. E nomination in EPFO simply means you file that instruction online instead of on a paper form signed at the office. The nomination covers three benefits that belong to every member:

  • EPF balance: the provident fund amount, paid to the nominee or nominees in the shares you set.
  • EPS pension: monthly family pension for a spouse and children under the pension scheme.
  • EDLI insurance: the insurance amount linked to your PF membership, paid to the nominee.

Searches like enomination epfo, pf e nomination or epf e nomination all point to the same form. There is no separate site; it sits inside your own member login.

Before you start: what the portal checks

The e-nomination link does not open until your profile is complete. Check these first:

  • Your UAN is active and you can log in. If not, see UAN activation.
  • Aadhaar is verified on your account. The KYC page explains how.
  • Profile fields such as father's name, marital status, address and a profile photo are filled in.
  • The mobile linked to your Aadhaar is with you, for the final OTP.

Keep a short list ready for every family member: full name as in Aadhaar, Aadhaar number, date of birth, relationship and a recent photo saved as a small image file. The portal shows the allowed size.

EPFO e nomination login and filing steps

The epfo e nomination login is the normal member login; there is no separate password for the epf e nomination login.

  1. Log in on unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in with UAN, password and captcha. The UAN login page helps if it fails.
  2. Open Manage and select E-Nomination.
  3. Answer whether you have a family. Married members and members with children must say yes.
  4. Add each family member with Aadhaar, name, date of birth, gender, relationship and photo. The system checks each against Aadhaar before adding.
  5. Tick the people you want as nominees and enter the share for each so the total is 100 percent.
  6. Save the EPF nomination. If shown, complete the EPS section too.
  7. Click E-sign, choose Aadhaar or Virtual ID, and enter the OTP from your Aadhaar mobile.

A message confirms that the nomination is signed. Until that point it is only a draft and does not count.

Who counts as family for PF and pension

Under the scheme rules for e nomination for PF, the law decides who you may name. If you have a family, the nominee must come from it.

Family memberNotes
SpouseMust be added even if you do not give them a PF share
Sons and daughtersAdded as family; they count for children's pension
Dependent father and motherCan be nominees
Widow and children of a deceased sonCounted as family
Husband's dependent parentsFor women members only

The separate pension nomination link opens only for members with no spouse and no children. They may name one person for pension. An unmarried member with none of the listed relatives may nominate any person for PF.

A worked example of the share split

Ravi is married with one daughter and a dependent mother. He adds all three as family. He nominates his wife for 50 percent, his daughter for 30 percent and his mother for 20 percent: 50 + 30 + 20 = 100. If his PF balance were Rs 4,00,000 on the date of a claim, the split would be Rs 2,00,000, Rs 1,20,000 and Rs 80,000. Family pension under EPS would still go to his wife and daughter by the scheme's own rules, whatever the PF split says.

Changing a PF nominee later

A signed nomination cannot be edited. To update it, file a fresh e-nomination and e-sign it; the latest signed version replaces the old one. Do this when:

  • you marry, since a nomination filed while unmarried stops being valid;
  • a child is born;
  • a nominee dies;
  • you want to change the shares.

To check the current nominee in your PF account, open E-Nomination again; the signed nomination and its PDF are listed there.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an EPFO e nomination last date?

No closing date has been set. EPFO has run drives urging members to file, so treat it as urgent rather than optional. File it now so your family is protected.

Can I add more than one nominee?

Yes. Add each person and give each a share. The shares must add up to 100 percent.

Does a nominee need a bank account?

Bank details are optional during nomination. The nominee gives bank details when they file the claim later.

Can I nominate a friend?

Only if you have no family as defined by the scheme. If you have a spouse, children or dependent parents, the nominee must be one of them.

What happens to my nominee after I change jobs?

The nomination sits on your UAN, so it continues with you. Check it after a PF transfer and file a fresh one if family details changed.

How does a nominee claim after a member's death?

The nominee files a death claim with the regional office using the forms for PF, pension and insurance. A signed e-nomination makes identity checks much quicker.
