Know your UAN is the EPFO option for people who have a UAN but cannot remember it or never received it. It uses your mobile number, an OTP and one identity detail to show the number on screen. You can also find the UAN on papers you already have.
For anyone asking how to find my UAN number fast, this page lists every route from quickest to slowest, and what to do when none work. As an independent guide, we have no access to EPFO records and will not ask for your Aadhaar or OTP.

When you need to know your UAN number
You need your UAN when you join a new employer, sign in to the portal, check your passbook, or file a claim. Many people got the number from their first employer years ago and lost the slip. Others had it created by HR and were never told.
Before searching, ask yourself one question: did any employer ever deduct PF from your salary? If yes, a UAN almost certainly exists, and you should find it rather than make a new one. A second UAN causes trouble at claim time. If no employer ever deducted PF, you may need a fresh UAN, covered on our UAN activation guide.
Quick places where you can find UAN number
Try these first. They take no OTP.
- Your latest or any old salary slip. The UAN is often printed near your employee code.
- Your Form 16 or the PF section of a pay statement shared by HR.
- Old SMS from EPFO about monthly contributions.
- A downloaded UAN card or passbook PDF in your email or phone.
- Your current or former employer's HR or payroll team, who can look up the number in their records.
If you only have a member ID from an old slip, keep it. It works as a search detail in the online method below.
EPFO know your UAN steps on the portal
- Go to the member portal sign in page and choose Know Your UAN from the important links near the sign in box.
- Enter the mobile number you want the OTP on and type the captcha.
- Request the OTP, then enter it to confirm the number is yours.
- Type your name and birth date the way your employer recorded them.
- Choose one detail to search with: Aadhaar, PAN or a member ID, and enter it.
- If the screen asks for an ID or address proof, upload a clear copy in the format shown.
- Submit. If a match is found, the UAN appears on screen, and the portal may also send it by SMS.
The search works best when your name and birth date agree with what your employer entered. Try your name as on Aadhaar first, then as on your old salary slip.
How to get UAN number from PF number
If you have an old PF member ID but no UAN, choose the member ID option in the search step above. Enter the full 22 character ID without slashes, plus your name and birth date. The portal looks up which UAN that member ID is linked to.
Example. An old slip shows MH/BAN/0012345/000/0012345. Typed without slashes it becomes MHBAN00123450000012345, which is 22 characters. That is what you enter. This sample number is invented.
If you are unsure what each part of the ID means, our what is UAN page has a decoder tool.
Finding the UAN in the UMANG app
Inside UMANG, EPFO appears as a department with services for employees. Look for the option to know or retrieve your UAN. It asks for your UAN linked mobile number and an OTP, then shows the number. Menu names in the app change from time to time, so search for EPFO inside the app if you cannot see it.
UMANG is also where new UANs are created and existing ones activated, through Aadhaar face authentication. If the search shows no UAN at all, that may be the next step.
Why the search fails and what to do
| Problem | Why | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| OTP not arriving | Network delay or wrong number typed | Wait, check the number, request once more |
| No record found | Name or birth date differs from EPFO records | Try the spelling on your old payslip, or search by member ID |
| Aadhaar search fails | Aadhaar was never linked to the UAN | Search by PAN or member ID, or ask the employer |
| Mobile not registered | Employer saved another number | Use a number you control for OTP, then match by other details |
| Two UANs shown or suspected | Duplicate created by a second employer | Keep one, ask EPFO to block the other, transfer balance |
If nothing works, write to your employer with your full name, father's name, birth date and joining date. They can find the UAN in their records. You can also raise a grievance, described on helpline and grievance.
After you find it: next steps
- Save the UAN in a safe place, such as a note on your phone.
- Check whether it is activated. If sign in fails with an activation message, activate it in UMANG.
- Sign in and confirm your KYC: Aadhaar, PAN and bank. See KYC update.
- Give the UAN to your new employer so the new member ID is linked to it.
- Merge old accounts through PF transfer.
Searching for your own UAN is free. Do not pay anyone who claims they can pull out your UAN or PF details from a database.
Frequently asked questions
Can I find my UAN number with only my mobile number?
The mobile number is needed for the OTP, but the portal also asks for your name, birth date and one of Aadhaar, PAN or member ID. Mobile alone is not enough.
Does a missed call tell me my UAN?
The missed call service is for balance and works only from a number already registered with an active UAN. For finding the UAN itself, use know your UAN on the portal or UMANG.
I never had a PF deduction. Will know your UAN work?
No, because no UAN exists for you yet. Your employer can create one, or you can create one yourself in UMANG through Aadhaar face authentication.
Where can I find UAN number on my salary slip?
Look near your employee code, PAN or bank details on the slip. Some employers label it UAN, others write Universal Account Number or PF UAN.
Can my old employer tell me my UAN after I have left?
Yes. Former employers keep your PF records and can share the UAN with you if you give your name, joining date and date of birth.
Is there a Hindi guide to finding the UAN?
Yes. Our UAN number kaise pata kare page covers the same task in simple Hindi.
